How To Stay On Trend 2014

Whether you’ve resolved to be more creative in 2014, try new projects or freshen up your home – the New Year is the most perfect time to start a fresh! But where do you start? And how do you stay on trend?

Here’s what the experts have to say about 2014 trends.

Colour sparks the imagination

Re-energise a room or any space with touches of this bright and confident colour. ‘Radiant Orchid reaches across the colour wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination.’ Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute®.

Distress to the Max

‘I say, out with the old and back in with the even older old! This year, I see colour trends getting a lot bolder with lots of greys, blues and greens and dare I say a much grungier look with them too. With the industrial grunge look taking on the soft romantic look. With even the soft creams getting roughed up with lashings of dark waxes and distressing to the max.’ Sonia Morgan, Vintage Uniques Painted Furniture

Bright, vintage-style prints with a modern twist

‘The prospect of spring and the excitement of nature bursting back to life is SO inspiring. Fresh, white, backgrounds, floral designs, beautiful vintage-style prints with a modern twist and those with a rich historical feel will be big this year. Sunshine is always heavenly and 2014 looks set to feature yellow as a key colour. Not as difficult to live with as you may think, paired with greys and warm, earthy tones, yellow will brighten up any project. For a really simple make-over, why not dye your fabrics, this can be done by total submersion, in a washing machine even, and also by a variety of other dye-placement techniques. Beads, ribbons and other fabrics can be added with glues and iron-on adhesives, so no need to even get the sewing machine out! With ANY craft or project, recycle and re-use as many materials as you possibly can. You’ll be amazed what you already have in your home, just screaming to be made into something gorgeous, to cherish and to keep!’ Ellie Jarvis, Textile Designer, Clovelly Silk

It’s all about blooms

‘This year is going to be the year of flowers- flowers that awaken our senses and imagination. As the sweet scent of spring/early summer approaches we’ll see Hyacinths, Narcissus, Sweet Peas and elegant Hanging Catkins coming into bloom and in vogue. White to pink, rose to purple Hellebores, fresh soft leaves and pastille colours will lead us into the flower power extravaganza of summer and autumn. Bold and blousy blooms that sit with an array of foliage and wispy grasses will whisk us into winter.’ Kitten Grayson, Creative Director, Kitten&Co

It’s important to remember that style is unique to every individual - no matter what the trends say! Don’t be scared to try new things, follow your instinct and change direction if needs be! You don’t need to spend a fortune either - even minor changes including splashes of colour, texture or materials can keep you up to date. Good luck and don’t forget to post images of your projects and/or interior inspiration on the Kirstie's Vintage Home Facebook page.
