Passionate about our people

At Raise the Roof we believe that our colleagues are our greatest asset. We put their welfare and career development front and centre and we’re proud of the work we do to provide an inclusive environment for all. We work hard to bring young and diverse people into our vibrant and exciting industry.

We would be nothing without our core staff and the amazing Scottish freelance community, many of whom have returned to work with us again and again, growing their careers through training and development opportunities at Raise the Roof.

Directors

  • Jane Muirhead

    MANAGING DIRECTOR

I’ve lived the highs and lows of running an indie, and I want to use my experience and position to help and inspire people from every part of society to forge a career in TV.

As co-founder and managing director, Jane is the cornerstone of Raise the Roof, responsible for its running and strategic direction. Under her leadership, the company has grown to be one of the country's biggest true indies, recognised for the quality of its content and for its commitment to diversity and staff training. Jane is passionate about skills and the development of the next generation of talent, and currently chairs the Unscripted TV Fund. She is also Chair of Pact and works tirelessly to champion the sector. Jane was awarded an Honorary Professorship from Stirling University in 2018.

  • Sarah Walmsley

    CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Working with people I that admire and love has been one of the most rewarding and joyful things about setting up Raise the Roof.

Sarah co-founded the company along with Jane, Kirstie and Phil in 2010. Her dream was to create a company known for making brilliant content, but more than that, she wanted Raise the Roof to be somewhere people really want to work. So, she couldn’t be prouder of it being voted one of the Broadcast Best Places to Work every year, since the survey began. Sarah is passionate about every part of the programme making process, working closely with the development team to create new formats and with production teams to shape the programmes.

  • Andrew Jackson

    CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Having been at Raise the Roof for over a decade, I’ve watched countless people progress through their careers and grow as individuals, and that is the most rewarding part of this job.

After working at C4 for six years and heading up the Features Department, Andrew left the broadcaster in 2012 to join Raise the Roof as Creative Director. He works alongside Jane, Sarah and Linsay to mould a development and creative strategy to keep driving the company forward. He also still loves being a hands-on Exec working with the whole team to create content to be proud of. He counts his first commission with Raise the Roof, ‘Kirstie's Fill Your House for Free’ as one of his highlights.

  • Kirstie Allsopp

    DIRECTOR

I love property and crafting brings me so much joy, so I consider myself incredibly lucky to do this job. I’ve done some truly amazing things and met countless wonderful people along the way.

Since being paired with TV husband Phil in 1999, Kirstie has traversed the UK, helping homeowners find their dream home - whether that means moving, or remodelling the one they’re already in. She also sparked a craft renaissance that’s swept the nation. Her Christmas series is beloved by its viewers, signalling the start of the festive period for families across the country.

  • Phil Spencer

    DIRECTOR

Property is in my blood, so it’s a huge privilege to work with house hunters across the country to understand and interpret their needs, find them homes and negotiate deals.

Equally happy in smart suits and walking boots, Phil is a country lad turned property expert, and with Kirstie, is one half of the UK’s favourite TV property duo. He's passionate about tackling homelessness and helped create our award-winning documentary ‘Find Me a Home’. He's also the star of our innovative walking series ‘Great British Dog Walks with Phil Spencer’ – only slightly upstaged by his pup, Luna.

Heads of Department

  • Linsay Gordon

    HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT

One minute you’re creating a series set on a farm, the next writing a documentary on homelessness; exploring the work of high-end florists, or working out how to travel around Europe in the most fun way possible.

Linsay’s been the lifeblood of the company's development department since 2012, managing the team and all their ideas, generating formats and series, pitching them and securing commissions. Her biggest commission to date is ‘Sunshine Getaways with Amanda Lamb’ - a whopping 80 hours for Channel 5, just a fraction of the 350+ hours that she's had commissioned as Head of Development.

  • Sarah Lithgow

HEAD OF LEGAL AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS

The top three things about working at Raise the Roof are the people, the programmes, and the fact that no two days are ever the same.

Since 2014, Sarah’s overseen production and commissioning contracts, distribution and everything related to RTRP’s corporate and business affairs. She is the person the teams all turn to for advice on any compliance or copyright concerns and is on hand to discuss any legal issues involved in new programme ideas. She has all the answers and always works with the teams to find a solution.

  • Ali Walker

    HEAD OF PRODUCTION

Constantly driving change to deliver continuous improvement is key to the success of Raise the Roof. We’re always looking for ways to do more and be better.

Ali joined the company as a Production Manager in 2013 and was rapidly promoted to Production Executive, before rising to become Head of Production in 2023. She works closely with Jane and the rest of the senior management team, overseeing all aspects of our productions. From creating budgets for development projects, through every stage of production, and on to distribution and more. If it’s happening, Ali is across it.

Core staff

  • Robert Brown

    ASSISTANT PRODUCER: DEVELOPMENT

Individuality and creativity are actively encouraged at Raise the Roof. We all know its the lifeblood of our company.

Robert’s been part of the Development Team since 2016, creating a raft of programmes, including ‘Flour Power’ and ‘Fight Like a Girl’, and helping to develop ‘A Country Life for Half the Price’ and ‘Billionaire Blooms’, among others. While at Raise the Roof he's been supported through Supersizers, the TRC training course for Development Executives. His brilliant puns and inspired programme titles are a daily source of joy, inspiration and occasionally pain for everyone in development.

  • Anne Dillon

OFFICE MANAGER & EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO JANE, SARAH & ANDREW

The fast-paced environment and the way everyone at Raise the Roof supports each other is what makes the company such a great place to work.

The office would simply fall apart without Anne to keep everything on track - to say nothing of Jane, Sarah and Andrew's diaries and travel arrangements. Anne is central to keeping the company running smoothly, and is unfazeable, no matter what is thrown at her.

  • Chris Hall

    PRODUCTION MANAGER

I love helping those new to television learn and develop. Seeing them grow and progress in their careers is really rewarding.

Having worked across a raft of Raise the Roof’s slate, including ‘Kirstie's Handmade Christmas’, ‘Len Goodman's Holiday of My Lifetime’ and ‘Phil Spencer: Find Me A Home’, Chris's days are currently spent managing the beast that is ‘Love It or List It’. With a long running schedule, across several series and umpteen stories all underway at any given time, keeping the team on track, on budget and safe is the definition of a full-time job, but a happy team and brilliant shows make it all worthwhile.

  • Jeannot Hutcheson

    HR & TALENT EXECUTIVE

The opportunities for career development that we offer through internships and training is what makes Raise the Roof stand out.

Jeannot is key to ensuring the company is at the forefront of developing the hugely talented freelance community in Scotland. Nothing makes her happier than watching colleagues progress from Researcher to Series Producer, Coordinator to PM. The company supported Jeannot's own career development, as she studied for her MSc in Human Resource Management. As lead on mental health, she works hard to bring everyone together through regular events like mental health cuppas, walks, and weekly Wednesday night drinks.

  • Nina Stafford

    PRODUCTION MANAGER

Proudest career moment so far? Being part of the Scottish Bafta award-winning ‘A Country Life for Half the Price’ team.

Nina has been part of the production management team at Raise the Roof since 2019, progressing from Production Coordinator to Senior Coord and now, Production Manager. Nina finds it exciting to work for a company that supports staff in achieving their career goals - with lots of training leading to fresh opportunities. She's loved being able to step up and feel supported, even when it’s challenging.

  • Jonny Wharton

    EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Keeping a huge brand like ‘Kirstie and Phil's Love It Or List It’ fresh, yet familiar, is a massive responsibility, but the most brilliant challenge. It’s a genuine privilege.

One of the longest serving members of the team, Jonny has progressed from shooting AP to Executive Producer at Raise the Roof. As Exec on our biggest format, ‘Kirstie and Phil's Love it or List it’, Jonny gives all the credit for the show's phenomenal ratings success to his incredible team.

  • Francesca Woulfe

    PRODUCION COORDINATOR

Watching one of my episodes of Love it or List it go out on TV, with my mum, who is a superfan, gave me a real moment of pride.

Problem-solving and working to tight deadlines are a key part of Fran's job. She can turn her hand to every scenario, from planning and scheduling complex multi-crew presenter days, to the simpler, but equally important, self-shot documentary filming days. She also helps manage casting and post-production. In addition to this, Fran is one of Raise the Roof’s four in-house mental health first aiders, always on hand to offer a listening ear to anyone in the company who needs some support.
